Atlanta | Tips and Tricks for Moving from Asset Database to a Functional CMDB

Most organizations have an asset database in some form, whether a formal application that tracks assets or a simple spreadsheet or web page. Adding structure to an asset database to create a CMDB that becomes useful for decisions throughout the IT organization requires significant planning. Join us to learn what you need to consider and what to think about as you plan to move from your asset database to a fully functional CMDB.

**Synopsis**
An asset database is useful for tracking and managing the physical (and sometimes software) assets through their lifecycle and in use within your enterprise. But asset data alone cannot provide sufficient information to support the complex tasks commonly required by your enterprise in its day to day usage of those assets, nor can it provide the backbone for the support of services provided by your enterprise for these assets. To provide this level of support requires a Configuration Management Database, or CMDB.

A true CMDB provides a ?single source of truth? that includes both the physical and logical assets in your enterprise as well as the dependencies that exist between each of these assets. It must be able to automatically collect and update asset information to ensure the CMDB data remains accurate in the face of constant change, and must be normalized to ensure there is only a single record for each asset that is discovered. Finally, a CMDB must have the ability to move data to other tools that perform critical functions such as ticket management, change management and system monitoring, to ensure they are working with the same set of data that everyone else has available.

This presentation will review how you can move from a simple asset database to a fully functional CMDB that can meet these critical needs and can support your enterprise through whatever changes are thrown at it.
