DESIGN&VISION: How can we help the blind and visually impaired to navigate their journeys and access information? Designers have wrestled with these challenges for centuries with mixed results. This talk will examine the art of accessible design through instructive case studies including The War of the Dots, the architecture of the Perkins campus, and the evolution of screen reading solutions. Mr. Power will also outline future design challenges to overcome barriers in education, employment and independent living.

BIO: Dave Power is President and CEO of Perkins School for the Blind, the first school for the blind in the U.S. and now a global organization working to prepare blind and deafblind students for the world, and the world for those students. As the former CEO of Novera Software, partner at Fidelity Ventures, and SVP of RSA Security, Power knows how to make change happen in any setting -- and he’s committed to changing how the world sees blindness. After years of advising CEOs and executive teams on how to accelerate company growth and innovation, Power is addressing how the education and business sectors can collaborate to ensure that blind individuals have the same education, career and daily living opportunities as their sighted counterparts. In addition to his leadership role at Perkins, Power teaches design thinking at Harvard Extension School, where he received the Joanne Fussa Distinguished Teaching Award in 2014 and is the author of "The Curve Ahead: Discovering the Path to Unlimited Growth." Power received a BS in civil engineering and MS in environmental engineering from Tufts University and an MBA from Stanford Business School, where he was an Arjay Miller Scholar.
