Emerging Technology and Inclusive User Experiences:
A Look Into the Crystal Ball
According to a recent survey from the Pew Research Center, four in ten Americans credit technology with improving their lives more than any other factor in the past 50 years. And Americans expect this trend to continue in the future. But consider how much more influential emerging technology could be for the 40 million plus Americans who have some type of physical challenge. For example, imagine for a moment what self-driving cars will do for those who cannot drive on their own or how wearable devices and advanced GPS will help those who cannot see where they are going. And as we all know, the user experience of these innovations will be the key to adoption and the product’s influence on our lives.
This presentation will provide a brief history of digital innovation and its role in improving human existence, and quickly move into the opportunities technology provides today and into the future. The audience will consider how the Internet of Things, wearables, smart home devices, augmented reality and machine learning will be leveraged and experienced by those who are physically challenged. Attendees will come away with a new perspective on the importance of inclusive design, especially as we start to build the next generation of products and experiences.
Presenter - Gary Aussant, Director of Digital Accessibility
Gary joined Perkins in 2018. Over his 20-year career in technology and user experience consulting, Gary has helped numerous Fortune 100 companies including Bank of America, Microsoft, Google, Facebook, eBay, General Motors, Transamerica, and Twitter embrace universal design methodologies. He specializes in employing design thinking and usability testing to uncover opportunities for improving digital experiences earlier in the product development life-cycle. Gary strongly believes that digital accessibility is not just a legal requirement, but an opportunity to improve an experience for all users. He is passionate about helping clients sustain their accessibility efforts by incorporating universal design best practices into their day-to- day operations.

Directions by Car
From the Massachusetts Turnpike, also known as I-90 (traveling east or west), take Exit 17 and follow the signs marked "Watertown," which lead to Galen Street. Follow Galen Street, crossing the bridge, to Watertown Square. Bear right (not the hardest right that leads along the river) onto North Beacon Street (Route 20). Follow North Beacon Street for about one-half mile to the Perkins campus (located on the right). Pass the campus and turn right onto Beechwood Avenue. The parking lot for the Grousbeck Center for Students & Technology is on the right.
Public Transportation (from Kenmore Station)
At Kenmore Station in Boston, take Bus #57, marked Watertown. Get off at the last stop, Watertown Square. Cross the bridge and stay to the right, following North Beacon Street (Route 20). The campus is one-half mile on the right. (Travel time: about one hour.)
Public Transportation (from Harvard Square)
At Harvard Square in Cambridge, take Bus #71, marked "Watertown." Get off at the last stop. With your back to the river, walk to the right following North Beacon Street (Route 20). Follow North Beacon Street for about one-half mile to the Perkins campus located on the right. (Travel time: about 45 minutes.)
