The cancer center’s researchers conducted 1,364 clinical trials in FY19 that tested new drugs, new combinations of drugs, new surgical procedures or devices, or new ways to use existing treatments. As a major contributor in the field of precision medicine, personalized care, and genomic medicine, the institute is at the cutting edge of innovation and technology advancements. Through its education programs and network of affiliates, MD Anderson influences the cancer care for one-third of the world’s population. We invite you to a discussion with two of MD Anderson’s boldest innovators, Dr. Andrew Futreal, Ph.D., Chair of Genomic Medicine, and Dr. David Jaffray, Ph.D., Chief Technology Officer, on the topic of the personalization of healthcare and medicines using data and AI. SPEAKERS:ANDREW “ANDY” FUTREAL, Ph.D.As Chair of Genomic Medicine at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Dr. Futreal seeks to improve cancer care by creating a world-class program in comprehensive cancer patient genomics. He holds the Robert A. Welch Distinguished University Chair and serves as co-leader of the Translational Research Accelerator (TRA), the Cancer Genomics Laboratory and the Adaptive Patient-Oriented Longitudinal Learning and Optimization (APOLLO) platforms — vital research engines supporting MD Anderson’s Moon Shots Program®. As leader of MD Anderson Patient Mosaic™, Dr. Futreal is working to drive comprehensive, longitudinal molecular characterization of patients with full integration of clinical data to provide new insights into the roles of variation and possible diagnostic/intervention/therapeutic opportunities for improving patient outcomes. DAVID JAFFRAY, Ph.D.Dr. Jaffray is Senior Vice president and Chief Technology and Digital Officer at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. He also is professor of Radiation Physics with a dual appointment as professor of Imaging Physics. Recruited to MD Anderson in May 2019, Dr. Jaffray directs the strategic design, acquisition, management and implementation of technology infrastructure across the institution. A proven innovator with more than two decades of scientific expertise, he also oversees the development of MD Anderson Patient Mosaic™ and leads data integration, data governance and data security efforts across MD Anderson’s Houston campuses and national network. Additionally, he collaborates with the Strategic Industry Ventures team and the chief scientific officer in advancing meaningful partnerships with industry. DANIEL DARLING Daniel Darling, Founder and Managing Partner of Darling Ventures, has built a career as an entrepreneur and investor specializing in the intersection of new technology innovation and business strategy. Darling Ventures, the San Francisco-based venture capital firm, is investing out of its third fund and has partnered with over 20 startups to date. Darling Ventures focus is to be the first investor in advanced software and data technology startups transforming major industries. Daniel has invested in next-generation data and artificial intelligence startups innovating healthcare and has been an advocate for the role data can play in driving improved health outcomes. He is a member of the MD Anderson Advance Team Board and supports the institutions efforts in connecting with the Silicon Valley Ecosystem. Daniel has a degree in Economics and Social Sciences from The University of Sydney as well as executive education from the business schools of Stanford, Berkeley and Harvard.
